Aiming For That Second Interview

During a recession work opportunities are hard to come by, and job interviews are few and far between, so each stage of the job process becomes more important. The very first contact with a company is usually by resume, after which you hope to be offered a first job interview. If this doesn't happen, your resume will have been put onto the discard pile, with no hope of an interview. However, there are a few things you should be conscious of for your resume. What this means is that you need to make sure your qualifications for the job are what are required, and that your resume objective will stand out from most others. However, what you need to recognize is that the whole purpose of the resume is to get that first interview, and the purpose of that initial interview is to make it through to the second interview.

That first job interview has the goal of getting you a second interview, and so on. There may or may not be additional interviews even after this, depending on the company and the work itself.

But, how can you make sure that your resume and interview letter reaches the interview pile, and not the discarded never-to-be-seen-again pile?

There are a couple of obvious tips here that have to be mentioned. First of all, check your spelling and grammar, several times. It won't hurt to find a good friend to read through your resume looking for spelling errors, or grammatical errors, as it is very easy to miss these yourself when you have been looking at the same document for hours.

You'd be surprised at how many people send out resumes with glaringly obvious mistakes in them, a sure way to hit the reject pile. Make certain all the information you provide in your resume are entirely accurate. You do not want to be discovered to be stretching the truth somewhere during the interview process.

Replying with thank you letters is a good way of keeping your name in front of the company personnel, and needless to say, you can send your thanks after each phase of the interview process in the hope you will go further and get that second interview.
Certainly, you should thank each person who has given their time to interview you, and the letters should be a little different and personal if you can. Whether you send emails or snail-mail letters is one of those issues that is up for debate, but as the years go by, e-mail is becoming a more and more acceptable form of communication. Naturally, your interview letter and thank you letter needs to be error free as well as your resume, so spend the additional time getting this correct.
