All About Copper Sinks
Copper surfaces have been used for generations in all sorts of buildings, commercial and residential . It provides many of the same benefits of stainless steel, along with, and this is a major plus in the minds of many people, a rich, warm glow that complements modern, traditional and country decor. Copper sinks have continued to earn popularity, however amongst the high- end home owner, because of the unique look and style. With so many homeowners spending extra for stone counter tops and floors, it's time more people are made aware of the distinct attraction of copper sinks.
Copper sinks are found in three main styles or types, Under mount, Drop in, and Apron/ Farmhouse. These models are the same as you find in stainless steel or cast iron but they are made of COPPER, a beautiful, warm, rich metal. Besides this copper has the unique benefit of being antimicrobial, which means that bacteria and germs such as E. Coli, influenza and the like can not stay on copper for more than a couple of hours. So, now we have beautiful and healthy, what a combination.
When choosing a copper sink there are two things you should remember. Not all copper is the same. Just like stainless steel there are various levels of quality of the copper. Lower quality copper sinks that come from China and India may contain larger amounts of bronze or tin. A true high quality copper sink should be at least 98% pure copper. The other important fact to remember is that the thickness of the copper makes a big difference. With metals, thickness is generally denoted as the gauge. For copper kitchen sinks the minimum thickness should be 16 gauge with 14 gauge being the best choice. The lower the gauge number the thicker the metal.
Copper sinks come in both a polished finish and the natural patina. How you clean and take care of your new copper sink will depend on which finish the copper has. If you choose the polished patina, you will have to polish it on a regular basis to keep it shiny and new looking. Check for a polish made for copper. The patina of copper is like a living finish, it changes and reacts to the environment it is in. Oxidation appears which transforms the copper a darker color, thus the natural look. To keep up that darker color do not use harsh chemicals when cleaning, use only soap and water.
Copper sinks are appropriate for any type of home, from traditional to contemporary. Copper also has the unique capability to link up other rich materials like wood and stone. Just remember to buy quality of construction and a thick gauge and you will appreciate your copper sink like you have never enjoyed a sink before.
