As opposed to popular belief most parents do remember being young and part of being young is playing the latest music till you know each word of every song. Unfortunately among the other parts of being young is that you play the music very loud.
When we were playing loud music that just disturbed our parents and neighbors it didn't matter to much. Now that every teen seems to use an ipod or other music player the condition is worse. Teens never think of much ahead of the immediate situation and they surely do not worry about ear safety or what harm they could do to their hearing.
As a parent you should care for your kids health, teenagers specially can't be relied on to use common sense therefore you might have to be persuasive. If you could influence them to use a stereo with speakers for several hours a week rather than constantly pushing their earphones as deeply into their ears as possible.
As well as talking to them about their music, you might need to discuss the harm which can be done to a persons hearing while working around engines. Regardless of how large or small the engines may be, the continual noise may cause difficulties.
Lots of teen boys will mow lawns for some extra money during the summer time, if they are around a lawn mower engine for even several hours a day there is every possibility that there will be some hearing damage.
