I personally am an Idealist so we will look at that aspect first. Some of the several features being offered are, voice mail transcription, one number, cheaper international calls, and sms to email. Any of these could be of great benefit to users. Additionally with the financial control and specialized know how at Google the system is liable to be way better than any opposition.
The one number feature could be of great benefit to everybody that has got to stay in constant contact. Just as voice mail transcription would give you a permanently stored copy of all voice mail messages. Like millions I opened a Gmail service directly after launch and can still obtain any email from that time. I still have yet to bring about any impact in the massive storage allocated to my mailbox. This brings us to what I see as Google Voice cons. Do we really know what Google really does with the wide range of data it has on just about every individual using their services? Now with the new voice service they will be able to add information on every incoming call you have ever received and dialed on your new Google number. One of the things Google is not short of beside capital and online influence is data storage space.
As far as I understand Google has never done anything untoward using this data but the point is it is there. Governments all over the world would love to possess access to this information all using the guise of anti-terrorism measures. This might sound marginally melodramatic but the Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act of 2010 bill put forward in the American Senate would give the president and his security agents the ability to shut down the internet or police it if a vaguely written national cyber emergency was declared.
And as we all know were America goes almost all of the Western world soon follows. In one possible future if a similar bill was soon tabled in the European Union and elsewhere. Will you be so willing to have all this information freely accessible to shady government agencies?
People might be under the illusion that they actually have control over their accounts and could just delete any information which could compromise them. But any one that knows the operation of computers would know that is not true. If for example some shady agency was watching your mailbox, freshly deleted mails would be the first thing they would recover.

I don't imagine anyone can argue with the truth that Google Voice brings the company nearer to complete and irreversible control of the internet. Nevertheless being an idealist and interested in new technologies I applaud Google's new venture. And will almost certainly be first in line if and when it is released worldwide. At the same time I will be keenly aware that I will be significantly adding to my digital fingerprint.
